More than ten years ago, at the recommendation of Bob and Judy Futrell,
the Hickory Area adopted the Crossnore School as the beneficiary of our fund raising for charity. Since then, we have scheduled periodic – every two years - Drive and Dine events wherein we travel to Crossnore for a visit and tour. This has proven a great way to familiarize our members with Crossnore and why we are so supportive of what they do there. This month’s Drive and Dine was one such event.
Twenty-one members and guests gathered at the Paramount Pre-owned (previously Porsche Hickory) for a light breakfast compliments of the dealership. Following a brief driver’s meeting, we struck out for our drive to Crossnore, in Avery County.
The weather was absolutely beautiful and traffic was light. We chose to travel a route we have used in the past and used Ride with GPS to guide us. Michael and Whitney Moran took the lead.

Upon arrival at Crossnore,
we met Elizabeth O’Hagen
at the Sloop Chapel where she gave us a thorough overview of the School’s origins, purpose and current programs. Following an enlightening question and answer session, we were provided time to visit some of the facilities on campus and to do a driving tour of the property. Then, on to lunch.
We chose to have lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant with the expectation that we would then go on to Linville Winery. However, we spent more time at Crossnore and lunch than expected so that it was mid-afternoon by the time we had finished eating. A few of our group went on to Linville but the majority decided to head for home. Nonetheless, we all had an opportunity to drive some great roads, hang out with friends and learn a bit more about a wonderful organization.
