Ladies in Porsches (LIPS): March 3 – Six of our ladies gathered this month at Backstreets Bar and Grill for a little lunch and fellowship. They also contributed $5.00 each to support the children of Crossnore School.
Monthly Membership Meeting: March 10 – Twenty-four members and friends gathered at FOURK Restaurant for dinner and to visit with fellow Porsche enthusiasts. The meeting was hosted by Michael and Whitney Moran. Rich Peters and Jane Vittorio were acknowledged for their March birthdays and Al and Adrienne Johnston celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary this month. Congratulations to all.
There was no formal program planned but Michael did a great job of leading a discussion about the Amelia Island Concourse. Attendees at this year’s event including Al and Adrienne Johnston, Mike Rhyne and Jett Murphy who described some of their favorite cars on display and offered their personal perspectives on the overall event. The consensus is that this year’s Amelia was quite a spectacle and included a little something for anyone who appreciates beautiful automobiles. Per Al Johnston, the Amelia is an event every Porsche enthusiast should attend at least once.
Al and Adriene also gave a glowing report of their visit to the Brumos Museum in Jacksonville, FL while in the area. They happened to mention the many cars and displays highlighting Hurley Haywood’s career with Brumos Racing. During the discussion, Jett Murphy just happened to mention that Hurley Haywood was his college roommate (at least for a while). This revelation sparked some fun conversation. This evening’s raffle yielded three winners:· Melvin (Eddie) Edwards won a PCA branded thermal tumbler· Sandra Edwards (Eddie’s wife) won a small Porsche labeled cooler bag· Al Johnston won a Porsche labeled “commuter” bagAs a result of the raffle, we were able to raise $225.00 to support Crossnore Communities for Children. Thank you all who participated.Weekday Drive and Dine: March 12 – Bob and Judy Futrell organized this month’s drive … our first of the year. Unfortunately, the weather was not very cooperative. Twenty-two people in twelve cars registered but only 14 intrepid souls were willing to brave the predicted nasty weather.
As usual, participants gathered at Foreign Cars Europa for a light breakfast – compliments of the dealership – and driver’s meeting. Route guidance was provided by Ride with GPS so we took a little time to assure everyone had downloaded the app and route. With Bob in the lead and Bryson and Kathy Kiser in “sweep” position, our group of 8 cars departed on a scenic – albeit wet and cold – drive to Spruce Pine, NC for lunch at DT’s Blue Ridge Java Restaurant. Along the way up, we were a little disconcerted by the cars headed “down the mountain” with considerable snow on their hoods and roofs. Upon arrival we were greeted by a cold, biting wind and snow flurries. Fortunately, DT’s was warm and inviting and offered a great lunch menu.
Our original plan was to continue our drive after lunch with a visit to Banner Elk Winery for a glass of wine. But given the weather, a consensus was quickly reached that perhaps this was not this plan no longer had much appeal. So,back down the mountain we went with hopes of better conditions for our drive in April. We need some help! As you know, PCA is a volunteer organization. I, along with wife Jane, have functioned as Director(s) of the Hickory Area for more than ten years. Though it has been a pleasure to do so, we also have other interests. Consequently, we are asking for a volunteer to assume the role of Area Driving Tour Coordinator to help plan, coordinate and sometimes lead (with the help of others) our monthly driving events. For more details please contact either myself or Bryson Kiser, the Region’s Driving Tour Coordinator.. We would love to welcome you to our team.Speaking of team and volunteers, a search is currently underway for nominees to the Carolinas Region Board of Directors Executive Council. For details about these opportunities, please contact search committee Chairman, Doug Strait. We need your help and involvement to assure the Carolinas Region and Hickory Area continues to provide the kinds of programs and events you have come to value.Next Month …April 7 (Tuesday) - LIPS (Ladies in Porsches) – 11:30AM – 1:00PM @ Backstreets Bar and Grill, 246 14th Ave., NE, Hickory, NC.
